Addness MCP setup guide · Codex

Let Codex work from your real goals

Codex can take on a whole task, as long as it knows what the task is for. Connect it to Addness and it reads the goal, its parents and the work done so far, then leaves its results on that goal for the next person or AI.

How to connect

The easiest way is to ask the AI itself to set it up. If it gets stuck, show it these steps or finish them yourself.

Set up Addness MCP (https://vt.api.addness.com/mcp).

Approve the browser sign-in yourself when the AI reaches that step.

Sign in to Addness in your browser — no API key needed. Older Codex versions lack OAuth support, so update to the latest version first.

1

Add Addness MCP

Run this once in your terminal. Your browser opens automatically — authorize with your Addness account. The configuration is saved to ~/.codex/config.toml and works across projects.

$codex mcp add addness --url https://vt.api.addness.com/mcp
2

Check the connection

You're ready when Auth shows OAuth. If the sign-in didn't start, or after logging out, run codex mcp login addness.

What to ask once connected

Copy any of these and send it as is. The AI reads your Addness goals, to-dos and KPIs before it acts.

Start from a goal

Read this Addness goal and its parent goals, then tell me what done looks like before you write any code.
Turn this goal into child goals in Addness, each small enough for one Codex task.
Find the goal assigned to me with the nearest due date and start working on it.

Daily work

Check today's to-dos in Addness and tell me which ones you can finish on your own.
After the change is merged, record the pull request as a deliverable on the goal and complete the child goal.
Leave a short comment on the goal explaining the decision you made and why.

KPIs and reporting

Look at the KPI tree in Addness and explain which numbers this goal is meant to move.
List this week's completed goals in Addness and draft a short progress report for the team.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key?
No. You sign in to Addness in your browser and approve access (OAuth). Revoke the approval and the AI can no longer read Addness.
Codex says OAuth is not supported. What should I do?
Update Codex to the latest version, then run the add command again. If sign-in did not start, run codex mcp login addness. You are ready when codex mcp list shows OAuth.
What can the AI see in Addness?
Only the goals, comments and deliverables you can see yourself. The AI works with the same permissions as the account you signed in with, never more.
Can my team use different AI tools?
Yes. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Claude Desktop all read and write the same Addness goal tree, so one person's AI can pick up exactly where another person's AI left off.
Does it cost extra?
The MCP connection itself is included in your Addness plan at no extra cost. Pro and higher plans on monthly billing come with a 7-day free trial (see the pricing page for who qualifies).

Hand your goals to AI

A 7-day free trial is available for Pro or higher on monthly billing (see the pricing page for who qualifies). Starter has no trial and charges $4.99 per person per month upon sign-up. Create a goal, connect your AI, and ask it to move the work forward. The AI does the work; you review the results and decide what comes next.
