Limits of expression
AI can directly work with another participant’s Goals only as expressed at a given moment, together with feedback from reality.
THE ADDNESS METHOD · v1.0
Avoid relying on a single AI for everything.
Combine the abilities of people, AI, and organizations around a Goal.
Addness brings people and AI together for more than the work AI cannot do.
01 · WHY
AI can have Goals, create child Goals, and even act as the Owner of a Goal Loop. Three limits remain because of how purposes work, regardless of intelligence.
AI can directly work with another participant’s Goals only as expressed at a given moment, together with feedback from reality.
Even after achieving a Goal, a participant experiences the new reality and forms new Goals from unmet needs and possibilities.
Different participants have different Goals. No single answer is neutral from every participant’s perspective.
02 · WHAT
What a participant wants to achieve determines value, outcomes, and work. The Addness Method defines each concept in relation to a Goal.
Goal
Define what must become true for the world to have changed. A Goal describes a state beyond a wish or the name of a task.
Value
Value depends on whose Goal an action or object affects, and how. It is not an inherent property of the action or object.
Outcome
Documents and code are deliverables. An outcome occurs when reality changes and a Goal benefits.
Work
Activity becomes work when it reduces the gap and creates value. Performing tasks is not an end in itself.
03 · HOW
Define the desired state, take action, and use the results to update the current state, your approach, and the Goal. Keep repeating the Goal Loop as reality changes.
Child Goal → Action → Change in reality
Use results and feedback to update the current state
A prompt addresses a single request.
Addness keeps work aligned with an evolving purpose.
04 · STRUCTURE
Create child Goals from the gap between a larger Goal and its current state. Each child Goal has its own desired state, current state, and gap, with a Goal Loop of its own.
ROOT GOALThe highest Goal in the current Goal Tree, among the Goals a participant can express. A Root Goal can be deliberately revised as experience and feedback change what the participant wants to achieve.
05 · COLLABORATION
People, AI, and organizations can each have Goals and take action toward them. Define each participant’s relationship to a Goal, permissions, and next action.
Defines the desired state and holds final responsibility for the Goal
Co-edits the Goal Loop and child Goals
Contributes information, decisions, and actions
Takes the next action now
Owner, Editor, and Member are ongoing relationships. The Next Actor changes as the Goal Loop progresses.
SUBJECTA participant has a Goal and can act toward it independently. An organization becomes a participant at a higher level when people and AI sustain shared Goal Loops, memory, permissions, and actions.
06 · PRACTICE
Use a minimal Goal Loop to keep the desired state, current state, gap, actions, results, and updates connected. The seven states do not require seven meetings or forms.
Use the results to choose the next state
07 · USE CASE
Use 7-1-1 as one way to organize a Goal Tree by time. The approach helps when long-term ambitions and daily actions become disconnected; it is not a universal principle.
The broader value to create
A long-term state where the value is fully realized
Evidence of progress toward the 7-year Goal
The largest gap to reduce this month
The single action that makes the most progress
Top downShare desired states and priorities
Bottom upReturn results and lessons learned
08 · PRODUCT
Addness maintains a shared Goal Tree connected to one Root Goal, together with actions and feedback from reality. Work stays connected beyond individual tasks or AI requests.

09 · DIFFERENCE
Tools may look similar, but what they organize around changes the actions people take and the outcomes they produce.
